Disruptive Technologies Webinar Series: Using Disruptive Technology for Nuclear Safety Applications
Nuclear safety is fundamental to sustain nuclear power system industries. To improve the performance and to enhance the safety in operating nuclear power plants, it is necessary to adopt innovative sensing, monitoring, self-stabilizing systems, and intelligent measures for abnormal diagnostics, accident prevention, mitigation, and environmental protection against radioactive material releasing. Innovative equipment and methods are not only restricted to licensees but can also be embraced by regulators. These new technologies could result in leaps in nuclear safety while strengthening the competitiveness of nuclear power, accelerating the nuclear innovation cycle and attracting young talent to nuclear careers.

To explore these technologies and their application to the nuclear sector, the NEA has organised, with the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and the Korean Nuclear Society (KNS), a series of webinars to discuss the future shape of nuclear safety applications, focusing on global consideration of the use of these “disruptive technologies” in nuclear applications that evolve from concept to implementation.

The first webinar took place on 16 March 2021 and set the stage for deeper consideration of these new technologies. The second webinar, which marks the first of three technical sessions, aims to give an overview of these disruptive technologies, key trends and effects and possible implementation for nuclear safety applications. The webinar will also bring regulator’s viewpoints on safety innovations, examples from other industries and lessons learned.
